The Home Offices defines domestic violence as:

The violence may include physical, sexual, emotional, social, using and abusing children and financial abuse. Domestic violence occurs across society regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, wealth and geography. Domestic violence affects women, young people, children and men. It primarily consists of violence by men against women. However, heterosexual men are also abused by their partners or other family members, and it also occurs in same sex relationships.
